Why your vote matters
The research is clear: when LGBTQ+ people show up — and when pro-equality candidates win — communities get measurably safer and healthier.
8% of 2024 voters identified as LGBT — a record high, and roughly double the 4% share in 2008. Heading into 2020, nearly 9 million LGBT adults were registered to vote, and in 2024 94% of LGBTQ Americans said they were motivated to cast a ballot.

Yes — and growing fast. LGBTQ+ people made up 11.3% of eligible voters in the 2022 midterms and are projected to reach 17.8% of eligible voters by 2040. In 2022 Georgia, 88% of LGBTQ+ voters backed the pro-equality candidate — a margin big enough to swing tight statewide races.

The evidence says yes. After states legalized same-sex marriage, suicide attempts among all high-school students dropped 7% — and fell 14% among lesbian, gay, and bisexual students. Researchers estimate that's about 134,000 fewer adolescent suicide attempts every year.

It cuts risk in half. LGBTQ+ young people living in very accepting communities attempt suicide at less than half the rate of those in very unaccepting ones — a finding drawn from more than 18,000 LGBTQ+ youth. The policies on your ballot help decide which kind of community you live in.

Harm goes up. Anti-transgender laws are associated with up to a 72% increase in suicide attempts among transgender and nonbinary youth, and 90% of LGBTQ+ young people say recent politics have negatively affected their well-being. Elections decide whether these laws advance or fail.

Some do. About 825,100 transgender adults were eligible to vote in 2024, and an estimated 210,800 could face problems at the polls because their ID doesn't reflect their correct name or gender. That's exactly why checking your registration and ID early matters — start with the tools above.
